Hiking in beautiful nature is a wonderful experience for the whole family.
At Widetoes, we wanted to see how our kids’ feet would handle the varied terrain at Roque de Taborno in Tenerife.
Joining the adventure were Arthur (7), Greta (5), and Morgan (2) – each wearing a different model of Reima barefoot shoes.
The day was full of stunning views, challenging trails, and happy little feet!

An unforgettable family adventure
Roque de Taborno is often called “Tenerife’s own Machu Picchu,” offering a beautifully scenic hike with just the right amount of challenge. We set off early to avoid the hottest sun and made our way onto the winding trails. The terrain varied from rocky stretches to soft forest paths, and the kids did great – they absolutely loved the hike!
Some parts of the trail had steep drop-offs, but we moved carefully and carried the youngest when needed. Arthur was eager to hike on his own and didn’t want any help along the way.
We took breaks to admire the views and enjoy a snack on a cliffside overlooking the sea. Instead of doing the full loop, we chose to hike part of the trail and return the same way. By the time we got back to the car, we had covered around three kilometers

Shoes that passed the test
What made the hike especially enjoyable was that the kids were completely comfortable in their shoes — not a single complaint about blisters or discomfort! All three shoe models handled the varied terrain perfectly.
Arthur (7 years old) – Reima Rantaan
Arthur’s sandals were the perfect choice for the warm weather. They were airy and comfortable, and he loved how the thin sole let him feel the ground naturally. The sandals stayed securely on his feet, and he could run and climb without any issues.
Greta (5 years old) – Reima Tepastelu
Greta loved her colorful Tepastelu shoes, which offered great grip and stability on the rocky parts of the trail. She did notice that her feet got a bit warm after a while in the hot climate, likely due to the waterproof membrane. Still, thanks to the comfort and fit, she completed the whole hike without any problems!
Morgan (2 years old) – Reima Astelu
Morgan’s little feet were perfectly happy in the Astelu shoes! These barefoot shoes gave him the freedom to move naturally and explore the surroundings. The flexible laces made them easy to put on and take off — an excellent choice for an active summer day!
Why barefoot shoes are perfect for varied terrain
Reima’s barefoot shoes truly proved their strengths on this hike. The thin and flexible sole gave the kids great grip and ground feel, which improved their balance and safety on uneven terrain. The wide toe box allowed their feet to move naturally without any rubbing or discomfort.

As a physiotherapist, I know how important it is to let children’s feet move freely and naturally — and these shoes made that possible!
More adventures to come!
Our beautiful day at Roque de Taborno proved that the kids fully enjoyed the hike — and so did their feet! We ended the day with a meal at KFC and a relaxing swim at the Parque Marítimo César Manrique pools in Santa Cruz on the way home. A perfect ending to a memorable hike.
We’ll definitely continue using these shoes as we explore more amazing trails together. Thanks to Reima’s footwear, we had a day filled with joy, discovery, and confident steps on this volcanic island in Spain.
Lina wore her all-time favorites — Xero Shoes Scrambler Low.
Jonathan, who sticks to the theory that gear doesn’t matter and lives by the motto “my 2-year-old kid walked this with a Squishmallow in his hands”, completed the hike in his Barebarics Wave sneakers
We hope this inspires other families to head out on their own nature adventures — with the right shoes, every step is light and safe!
